CHPS Offers $5,000 Incentive Grants To Build Green Relocatable Classrooms!
In January 2007 CHPS added a new volume to its Best Practices Manual on high performance relocatables. In conjunction with this new opportunity to build green relocatables CHPS released a grant program to encourage manufacturing and purchasing of green relocatables by California school districts. CHPS is accepting on going applications for the remaining grants until awarded. CHPS is offering three $5,000 grants to offset the cost of building to the high performance specifications in CHPS Best Practices Manual Volume VI on Relocatables. You can download a copy of Volume VI by clicking on the image to the right, and you can learn more about the grant program by downloading a grant application by clicking here.

First School Projects In State Register To Become CHPS Verified
In March 2007 CHPS launched a new program for schools, CHPS Verified, a green school building program that combines project management, the CHPS building Criteria and a third-party assessment to ensure that a school project is designed and built to the highest performance standards. CHPS has begun accepting registration for the program and Northern California has taken the lead with two exciting projects in the pipeline; American Canyon High School in Napa and Burbank Elementary in Santa Rosa.
American Canyon is led by Quattrocchi Kwok Architects and will claim 32 CHPS points under the 2006 Edition Criteria, with a particular focus in Indoor Air Quality and Energy Efficiency. “Throughout the design process of American Canyon High School the Napa Valley Unified School District administration and community expressed a strong desire to incorporate sustainable design strategies into all parts of the project”, said project architect Aaron Jobson. “The new CHPS program allows us to quantifiably show that our design meets and exceeds those goals and allows us to qualify for increased funding from the State of California."

A school that is recognized as CHPS Verified is healthier, more environmentally efficient and cost-saving, and has been verified by an independent, third-party to be so. CHPS began as a self-certification building rating program, referred to as CHPS Designed. CHPS continues to offer both programs to allow flexibility in compliance. CHPS realizes that school districts face multiple challenges in building design and construction, such as student population growth, demand for improved student performance, and social and financial constraints. CHPS Verified is ideal for school districts or design teams seeking to verify their project’s performance. Participation will give design teams access to project management tools, and will assist in obtaining incentive funding (e.g. California’s Proposition 1D). Accountability will rest not only on the school district and design team but also on CHPS and an assigned independent reviewer. The Verification Program User Guide is available online and outlines design and construction review requirements and what each registered project will receive. All project tracking and review will be done online.

CHPS Receives $100K for Development Green Product Database for Schools
In June, the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) was awarded over $100,000 to develop a web-based, searchable green products database and labeling program for schools. The database will assist school districts and their design teams in sourcing building products and services that meet CHPS’ green building standards for schools. The two-year project will be supported and funded primarily through a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as well as by the partner organizations of the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB), California Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI).
“CHPS is excited to be able to build upon our contributions to the reduction of resource use and improvement of indoor environmental quality,” said Charles Eley, executive director of CHPS. “An environmentally preferable products and services database is a necessary tool for building the healthiest, greenest schools possible.”
