| Prop 1D Regulations Passed - Register Your CHPS Project Today |
CHPS is excited to announce that California's Office of Public School Construction has approved the regulations to distribute Proposition 1D $100 million in funding for high performance schools. California will use the CHPS Criteria as the basis for awarding the incentive grants. All public school districts that are eligible for state funding are eligible for Prop 1D grants. The funding will provide an additional 2% - 10.25% to qualifying projects, depending on how many CHPS points they achieve.
The funding is part of a larger $10.4 billion package passed in November 2006 by CA voters to upgrade public schools, including kindergarten through twelfth grade, community colleges, and state universities. The high performance incentives will fund new construction and modernization projects that promote the efficient use of water, natural resources and energy, and also provide superior indoor air quality, acoustics, and lighting. Eligible school projects will be awarded incentives through OPSC on a first-come, first-serve basis until the funding runs out.
Remember, applying for and receiving Prop 1D funding does not make your project a CHPS school. To qualify as a CHPS school, your project must be registered with either the CHPS-Designed or CHPS-Verified Programs. Register today!

| Congratulations to Santa Monica Malibu USD, our Newest CHPS District |
| CHPS congratulates Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District for its recent passing of a Board Resolution to build and modernize schools to the CHPS standard. Ted Bardacke, Global Green USA, who assisted the school district in the passage of the resolution, said, “As a future parent in the district I’m excited that our children will benefit from the work being undertaken at SMMUSD — those benefits will be felt not only in the classroom but also in the air and water quality of our unique coastal environment.” The SMMUSD School Board passed the resolution unanimously at its October meeting. SMMUSD educates 11,700 students in 16 schools. |
|
"Whereas, Students are entitled to a safe and healthy school environment, and studies have indicated that student achievement is significantly greater and attendance higher when the learning environment is naturally lit, comfortable and well maintained;... be it Resolved, That the Board endorses ... high performance schools goals and, by this Resolution, makes high performance and CHPS standards the policy of the District."

At the October Board meeting, Ted commended CHPS' flexibility for school districts, discussing how SMMUSD will be able to pursue the environmental issues that are most pertinent to the community. He said, "We have noted in the resolution that we should be investigating key items in this community, particularly stormwater management, solar hot water or solar voltaics, to take advantage of our ample sunlight, and wind power… I think you’ll be pleased in adopting CHPS that it will force architects who are already thinking in this way to really move it out of rhetoric and into the classroom.” Congratulations to everyone at the District and we look forward to many SMMUSD CHPS schools in the future! |
