| Thank You for Making Greentools for Healthy Schools 2007 a Success! |
| Thank you for making the 2007 Greentools for Healthy Schools Conference and Expo a truly great event! We welcomed attendees from twelve states and Canada, as well as twenty-five California school districts, thirty-two design professional firms, six federal and state agencies and sixteen environmental and children’s health organizations. |
 |
Attendees enjoyed a thought-provoking and humorous panel discussion between State Superintendent of Schools Jack O’Connell, Executive Officer of the Office of Public School Construction Rob Cook, State Architect David Thorman and Bill Savidge, Vice-Chair of CASH and Engineering Officer at West Contra Costa USD (right). Superintendent O'Connell said, "High performance schools are the future, and the future is now." We could not agree more with the Superintendent.
CHPS Executive Director Charles Eley and Global Green USA President Matt Peterson kicked off the event discussing the benefits of green schools (right). Workshops throughout the day were aimed at both the experienced high performance builder and those just getting started. Workshops covered a variety of strategies and tools for improving energy efficiency, daylighting, commissioning and indoor air quality. Presentations from Greentools are available on the Greentools website at: http://www.chps.net/GTAgenda.htm.

| CHPS Honored by Healthy Schools and Energy Efficiency Organizations |
American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) and Healthy Schools Network (HSN) Recognize CHPS, Executive Director Eley
CHPS was honored twice this past month for its work in helping to build healthy and energy efficient schools.
Charles Eley, the California architect and founding Executive Director of CHPS was presented with a National Healthy Schools Hero Award for 2007 on the eve of Greentools 2007, the first annual CHPS Conference, in San Francisco, CA.
In presenting the Award on behalf of the Board of Directors of Healthy Schools Network, Inc., a member of CHPS, Claire Barnett, Executive Director, said: “We salute the work you have done to develop and define healthy and high performance school buildings. CHPS recognized early on that just as children are not biologically ‘little adults’, that schools are not architecturally ‘little offices’.” She continued, “With your leadership, CHPS has elevated the importance of the schoolhouse and helped states and cities rapidly accelerate the numbers of schools that can implement healthy and high performance designs.” |
| |
Healthy Schools Network, Inc. is a national not-for-profit environmental health organization dedicated to assuring that every child has healthy school that is clean and in good repair. For more information, visit: http://www.healthyschools.org/
CHPS was also recognized by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). CHPS is honored to announce that the ACEEE, a nonprofit research group based in Washington, D.C., has recognized CHPS as an “exemplary program” as part of a national awards program to honor America’s leading energy efficiency programs. |
“The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy conducted this national review to recognize outstanding energy efficiency programs and honor the people and organizations responsible for their success. Programs such as CHPS demonstrate the very real value of energy efficiency to the customers it serves.” |
| |
Programs selected for this honor were judged especially noteworthy for their effectiveness and innovation in helping customers achieve greater levels of energy efficiency in their homes and business facilities. “These programs are delivering energy savings that are critical in helping customers cope with today’s high energy costs, plus they make an important environmental contribution because they help reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” noted Martin Kushler, Ph.D., ACEEE’s Utilities Program Director. He added, “This is truly a ‘win-win’ situation.”
“ACEEE conducted this national review to recognize outstanding energy efficiency programs and honor the people and organizations responsible for their success,” explained Dan York, Ph.D., the Project Director for this effort. He added: “Programs such as CHPS demonstrate the very real value of energy efficiency to the customers it serves.” |
