Frequently Asked Questions:

What Types of Projects are Eligible to Participate as CHPS Verified or CHPS Designed?

There are three project types that are eligible to participate. 1) New Schools, 2) New Buildings on Existing Campuses and 3) Major Modernizations. Each of these project types and there minimum requirements are defined in the CHPS Criteria, Volume III of the CHPS Best Practices Manual.

What is the CHPS Criteria?

The CHPS Criteria precisely define a high performance school. Criteria points can be obtained through a broad range of high-performance building design strategies including daylighting, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, acoustics, building commissioning, sustainable materials, waste reduction, preventative maintenance, site protection, and water conservation. The design team and school district choose a combination of points to create a high performance school. The CHPS Criteria may be applied for modernization, new building, and new school projects. School districts can use the criteria to clearly communicate their design goals and verify the facility’s final performance. Designers can use the criteria as a tracking tool for including high performance features under budget and timeline constraints. The CHPS Criteria is found in Volume III, of the CHPS Best Practices Manual.

Which Criteria Edition Should I Use?

All projects that submit plans to DSA for approval (public projects), or begin construction (non-public projects) after August 24, 2007 must use the 2006 Edition.

Prior to August 24, 2007 the 2002 Edition or 2006 Edition may be used.

A 2002 Edition project may chose to use approved 2006 Edition credits prior to the deadline. Click here to view a list of these credits.

It is highly recommended that a new building on an existing campus and major modernization projects use the 2006 Edition, when choosing between the two prior to August 24, 2007. The 2006 Edition improved the requirements, examples, thresholds and applicability for these project types. If the 2002 Edition is chosen for these project types they will be subject to the 2002 Edition thresholds and all of the prerequisites as was required in that edition.

How Do I Get Started?

The best way to get started is to understand the CHPS Criteria and know what is required. Download a copy of the Criteria and review the requirements for participation. If this is your first project also view the CHPS Planning Guide, Volume I of the CHPS Best Practices Manual.

Encourage your school district to sign a CHPS District Resolution. District commitment to high performance schools is important for the success of the project. It ensures that the design team and school district have similar high performance goals.
