New York CHPS Goes Verified

Hampton Bays Middle School has been recognized as the first NY-CHPS Verified school building. Designed and built to provide both a superior learning environment and a durable, cost-effective structure, the school exceeds standard building codes in energy use, water use and indoor air quality, while saving operating costs. Located in Hampton Bays, Long Island, and a part of the Hampton Bays Union Free School District, the high performance features of the building combine to warrant its designation as the first New York school that has been confirmed as built to NY-CHPS Criteria. Post-Occupancy Study of Washington CHPS School Released

Washington State's Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction has released a Post Occupancy Evaluation of the Washington Middle School. WMS was built to the Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol (WSSP), which is the state's adaptation of the CHPS Criteria. This report looked at the project performance and actual performance after two full years of occupancy. It includes sustainable design strategies employed, quantitative and qualitative evaluation, cost/savings reporting, and occupant feedback. The study found that "WMS achieves an overall performance grade of 'B+'... and performs well in energy use reduction, very well in water use reduction, exceptionally well in terms of indoor air quality, with room for improvement in indoor environmental quality." The study found that the cost increase was 3% overall. Washington State has made incentives available to green schools, so following the CHPS guidelines added less than 1% to the project.
