US-CHPS Criteria

Now for the first time a version of the CHPS Criteria rating system for healthy, high performance schools is available across America. This US-CHPS CriteriaTM is a companion to and based on the CHPS National Core Criteria (Core Criteria) that has been developed over the last two years. Integrated into US-CHPS are national benchmarks developed by ASHRAE, ASTM and many more.

2014 US-CHPS Criteria

US-CHPS can be used off the shelf without additional customization or public comment in school districts and school projects in any region or district in the 37 states that do not currently have a customized version of the CHPS Criteria. Alternatively, US-CHPS can be used as the basis with limited customization in these 37 states.

States

New states may adopt US-CHPS for K-12 schools as is, or may add code requirements and/or additional relevant resources without an intensive development process or additional public review. US-CHPS is also a great way to pilot test or evaluate the CHPS Criteria against any state green building/school requirements or incentives.

Similarly, existing CHPS states can opt to adopt US-CHPS as is or as a starting point along with their previous CHPS Criteria.

Districts

Most of CHPS programs including CHPS Criteria, CHPS Verified and CHPS Designed are intended for school system-wide use. Public school districts, charter schools and private/independent schools (with an independent governing board) may become CHPS members for free and adopt a CHPS resolution committing to use US-CHPS Criteria and/or the Operations Report Card for all of their schools.

Projects

US-CHPS also may be used for individual public, charter and private construction projects. CHPS has received numerous requests in the past that will no longer have to be turned away. Projects must meet or exceed applicable code requirements for school construction projects within that particular state or local jurisdiction, i.e. covered by US-CHPS.

However, US-CHPS may not be used for projects in states covered by a locally adopted CHPS Criteria -- currently Hawaii, Washington, California, Colorado, Texas, Virginia, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, and Maine.
