Overview of Compliant Low-Emitting Materials
In order to qualify as a CHPS school, it is necessary to attain
28 points from the CHPS
Criteria. Up to 4 points can be earned by incorporating low-emitting
materials into a project. CHPS Criteria, IEQ Credit 2: Low-Emitting
Materials outlines the requirements for this option.
As school districts realize the importance of healthy facilities,
they are looking to IEQ Credit 2 to enable them to select building
materials that contribute to good indoor air quality. To facilitate
the process and make it easier to comply with this credit, CHPS
has developed a Compliant Materials
Table that lists qualifying products. Each product listed
in the table, unless otherwise specified, qualifies as a point
(with a maximum of four) under the CHPS Criteria, IEQ Credit 2:
Low-Emitting Materials. IEQ Credit 2 requires that materials meet
Specification Section
01350. The materials in the table were tested using Section
01350 and were found to have chemical concentrations under the
specified limits for a typical
classroom.
Other products that have chemical concentrations under the specified
limits may be used to achieve these points as long as they are
tested according to Section 01350 at an independent lab as defined
in Section 01350. CHPS recommends that all interior materials
that potentially emit VOCs meet the low-emitting materials criteria.
This list was initiated by the Los Angeles Unified School District
(LAUSD)
and compiled in partnership with CHPS. In addition to LAUSD, numerous
other school districts in California have adopted resolutions
committing them to meet the CHPS Criteria. Several of these districts
as well as others in California and beyond provided letters supporting
the development of this information.
